**Bikes for Kids Wisconsin** offers a distinct range of services that align with its non-profit mission, focusing on accessibility, affordability, and community empowerment within the cycling world.
- Sales of Used and Refurbished Bicycles: They boast the largest selection of used bikes for sale in southern Wisconsin, offering quality adult and kid-sized bikes, including road bikes, commuters, and mountain bikes. All bikes are tuned up and ready to ride, providing affordable options for individuals, with sales proceeds directly supporting their giveaway programs. They also often have very affordable e-bikes, both new and used, for sale.
- Low-Cost Bicycle Repair and Tune-Ups: As a nonprofit, they provide tune-ups and repairs at a fraction of the cost of for-profit shops. While they may not service high-end bikes (typically $5,000 and up), they cover "steady rides" used every day. Services include quick fixes like flat tire repair, brake adjustments, and saddle replacement, with free estimates. Scheduling an appointment is recommended, but drop-ins are also welcome.
- Annual Bike Giveaway Program: This core program provides thousands of free, refurbished bicycles annually to individuals and families facing transportation barriers in underserved communities across Dane County and beyond Wisconsin. They partner with other nonprofits and public schools to ensure bikes reach those most in need.
- Bike Mechanics After School Program: This workforce development training program for youth, in partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District, teaches middle school students valuable bike care and repair skills.
- Bike to Work Program: This initiative focuses on high school students seeking employment, adults needing transportation for work, and new immigrant workers and refugees facing employment transportation barriers, providing them with bikes for economic mobility.
- Bike Fleet Services: They offer low-cost bike maintenance and repair services to schools and community centers that have bike fleets, with services performed both onsite and offsite.
- Bicycle Donations Acceptance: They accept donated bikes year-round, of all styles and sizes, from the community. These donations are crucial to their mission, as they are refurbished and given away or sold to fund their programs. They also offer community bike disposal services for bikes that cannot be saved, ensuring sustainable recycling.
- Volunteer Opportunities: They welcome volunteers year-round to assist with cleaning, refurbishing, organizing, and distributing bikes. No experience is necessary, and opportunities are available for individuals and groups, including corporate team-building events.
What truly makes **Bikes for Kids Wisconsin** a vital resource and highlights its impactful presence for the Wisconsin community are its distinctive features and unwavering commitment to its mission.
- Nonprofit, Mission-Driven Organization: At its heart, Bikes for Kids Wisconsin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This means every purchase or service supports their core mission of providing transportation access and promoting equity through cycling for underserved populations. Customers know their money directly fuels positive community impact.
- "Buy One, Give Two" Philosophy (or similar impact): While the exact ratio may vary, the spirit of giving away a significant number of bikes for every one sold, or where sales fund multiple giveaways, is a powerful motivator for customers. This direct link between public purchases and charitable outcomes is highly valued.
- Largest Used Bike Selection in Southern Wisconsin: For locals looking for affordable and diverse bike options, their extensive inventory of quality used bikes, from entry-level to mid-level, makes them a go-to destination. Each bike is tuned up and ready to ride, providing excellent value.
- Low-Cost Repairs: Their ability to offer tune-ups and repairs at a fraction of the price of for-profit shops is a massive benefit for the community, making bike maintenance accessible and affordable for everyday riders.
- Community Empowerment Through Education: Programs like the Bike Mechanics After School Program provide valuable life skills and workforce development to youth, demonstrating a holistic approach to community upliftment beyond just providing bikes.
- Focus on Transportation Equity: They believe "transportation is a right that does not need to be earned" and explicitly work to change the culture around how people view bicycles – as lifelines for employment, education, and economic empowerment, not just recreation. This deep philosophical commitment resonates with community needs.
- Sustainability Champion: By collecting, refurbishing, and repurposing thousands of bikes annually, they prevent a massive amount of metal and rubber from entering landfills, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability in Wisconsin.
- Inclusive and Welcoming Environment: Reviews highlight a "great core of regular volunteers that are awesome to work with and learn from," suggesting a friendly and supportive environment for both staff, volunteers, and customers. This nonprofit shop has an awesome selection of adult and kid-sized used bikes for sale, at the lowest prices I found in Madison! Lots of entry-level to mid-level road bikes, commuters, and mountain bikes-- all tuned up and ready to ride away. I love that the money I paid for a used bike supports their mission to give bikes away to others who need them. Awesome shop!

Feb 20, 2025 · Jeremy MoserI feel like a kid in candy store every time I come here!! Something about old vintage bikes and they do have a collection. They also have some fairly new bikes but regardless of preference, they probably have something for you. Great pricing on used quality bikes and bike repairs..This is a great place to volunteer too because everyone is so passionate about the end result...removing barriers to bike ownership.
Feb 25, 2025 · Gene SarmientoBikes for Kids Wisconsin is an incredible organization aimed at providing bikes as means of transportation and recreation for financially-challanged kids and adults. It is also an excellent bike repair shop staffed by experienced mechanics along with bike gear and new and used bike parts for DYI repairs. Want to purchase a bike? The warehouse is full of reconditioned or 'ready to be reconditioned' bikes for sale for every cyclist. Before you go anywhere else for repairs or purchase, check out Bikes for Kids at 345 Coyier Lane.
