Mike's Bikes of San Rafael Reviews
I am from Utah and purchased my Santa Cruz from Mikes Bikes online out of Northern California. The process was super easy and quick. They pre-assembled and tuned the bike then re-packaged it up. When it arrived I just had to install the handle bars and front tire and it was pretty much ready to ride. The whole process was very easy. I wouldn’t hesitate to make my next purchase from them again. 👍🏼👍🏼
Aug 12, 2024 · Joey WinzenriedThis service shop isn’t just incompetent, it’s dangerous. If an accident results from their neglect, they will bear full liability for failing to follow basic safety procedures.I have been a fairly longtime customer of Mike’s Bikes, having purchased three bikes from them and had two of them (BMC and Specialized) serviced under their service plans. Their lack of care has always been a bit concerning, but this latest issue and how they addressed it shocked me.I brought my BMC road bike in for a full service in October under a five-year maintenance plan. By February, while riding, my crankset nearly came apart—the cap was gone, and the screws were completely unscrewed. This wasn’t just bad workmanship; they likely never tightened the screws back after servicing the bike. My crankset was probably held together only by the end cap, which inevitably fell off. Had this failure happened at high speed or in traffic, the consequences could have been catastrophic. When I returned to the shop, the technician didn’t really inspect anything, he just tightened the bolts down without checking a thing. When I asked if he should maybe tighten them to spec, his response was “We never do.” After insisting, he eventually searched for the correct tool—for five whole minutes (concerning in itself). When he finally used it, the tool clicked instantly. He had most certainly already over-tightened them already. This kind of recklessness is shocking. After the so-called “repair,” I noticed the crankset was sitting 1/8” off from the frame. I asked the technician about it, and he insisted this was ‘normal.’ I then asked the manager, who also assured me this was how it’s supposed to be.When I asked who would cover the cost of the part that went flying off, they agreed to pay for it ($2) but dismissed the situation, saying “things like that happen all the time.” Well, no surprise, if you never tighten things to spec, of course, this happens all the time.On my next ride, I started having front derailleur shifting issues. Upon closer inspection, I found the entire crankset had moved by "that" 1/8” to the right. Their ignorance and negligence had directly led to another failure. The lack of knowledge is shocking. This isn’t some obscure part, it’s a Shimano Ultegra Di2, one of the most common and widely used groupsets in the cycling industry. They either don’t know what they’re doing, or worse, they don’t care. Frankly, I think it’s both.If you value your safety, avoid this shop at all costs. Their negligence isn’t just inconvenient—it’s dangerous and borderline criminal.
Mar 03, 2025 · Quentin CotillardDon't trust their repair services. I went to Mike's to get my bike tuned up after a long time of not having anything done to it. On their website they asked for an upper limit for repair and I left that blank because I did not want anything done to it without my approval. I did say to them do what you need to but we were talking about replacing the tubing, not that they were going to replace whatever they wanted at whatever cost - this is not an expensive bike. They ended up charging me more than double the quoted amount because they did a bunch of things that I didn't ask for. They did do a beautiful job, but I would expect them to call and ask me before making decisions after there's a written agreement on their site for an upper limit to the repair that I intentionally left as 0. When I asked them about doing extra work without my approval, they threatened to take off the parts they added, and leave me without a functional bike (break lines, gear shift). They also said they would get the service done in a day but they didn't even look at the bike until the following day. Sure we live in Marin, but not everybody is rich. The bike originally cost $500 and I paid more than $300 for the repair.
Jan 26, 2025 · Edward GalvezWe had a fast easy experience because they listened to what we wanted, asked the right questions, and were able to direct us to a couple bikes that fit our criteria. The salesman was friendly and gave good safety advice to my son.
Oct 22, 2024 · Matt RobbinsGreat selection, since they lost Specialized (and that's not their fault), they've added in Pivot which is a fantastic brand for mountain bikes, expanded Cannondale and still got a great selection of Santa Cruz bikes. Also what I love about this location is the kids bike selection and the repair team here is top notch. Highly recommend Mikes - and if you catch a sale you will 100% find a great deal!
