3.0
End of August 2024, (I have paperwork with date on it) I was contacted to pick up my bike, which had been damaged by an employee during unnecessary tinkering. The employee broke the main support bolt that holds the $4000 bike upright (folds in half for easy transport) I could not use bike due to recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Until December 28, I finally had the opportunity to ride my bike after a makeshift repair had been made by this shop. Unfortunately, while riding, the bike wanted to collapse on me causing damage on underside of bike. Regrettably, the shop was closed for the day, and I had to wait until Monday to address the issue.Monday I had the "pleasure 🙄" to speak with the owner, Robert, (who has more excuses in his brain rather then bike knowledge) He informed me that the necessary replacement part was no longer available. However, I pointed out that it is a standard component & still available. He then said that I buy the part myself & bring it in for repair, but when I inquired about reimbursement for the part—given that the damage was caused by HIS employee—he declined. It is concerning that this shop would expect customers to bear the cost of repairs resulting from their employees' mistakes. Robert even stated, “It’s not worth it to me to fix your bike,” which is both disheartening and unprofessional.I strongly advise against using this repair shop, as it may result in additional costs and frustration. If possible, I would rate this experience with NEGATIVE stars, as I believe it reflects a lack of accountability and customer careLmao you’re pretty funny Robert with your reply to my review. As your main employee was a witness of while I was speaking to him face to face at the time your other fill-in employee broke my $4000 bike. I remained calm the entire time. I honestly don’t appreciate you pointing blame onto me Robert when all you did was cut me off rudely every time I tried to speak to you while showing my bike to show you the part that your shop broke & tried to rig up. I was trying to show you how it wasn’t functioning due to me believing that you actually care about your repair jobs for a customers bike that your worker broke. Guess old age is setting in & you can’t remember how it REALLY went while I was there lol. (I didn’t ask for your ID either goofy, I asked for a business card.)It honestly should not cost me anything to fix the single part on the bike that YOUR SHOP WORKER broke when he should never of been touching anything but the brakes on the bike which was what was on the service order only. Your main worker witnessed this all happen too & apologized to me for having to still charge me for the brake repair that was done. Which I did pay for that repair. As others have written in their reviews, you’re a pretty rude business owner. Maybe start taking ownership to making the mistakes you do...mistakes do happen 🤷‍♀️ - Tina Klein

International Bicycle Shop Introduce

Welcome, Michigan cycling enthusiasts! When it comes to finding a local bicycle shop, especially one for repairs or a new purchase, understanding the experiences of other community members can be invaluable. International Bicycle Shop, located in Garden City, MI, is one such establishment that serves the cycling needs of residents in Wayne County and the wider Metro Detroit area. Like any local business, it strives to be a go-to spot for cyclists seeking parts, repairs, or perhaps a new ride.

The landscape of local bike shops is diverse, and each offers a unique approach to customer service and technical expertise. International Bicycle Shop, positioned on Middlebelt Road, aims to provide solutions for various cycling requirements. While some customers have reported very positive experiences, particularly with sales and post-purchase support, it is also important for Michigan locals to be aware of the full spectrum of feedback, especially concerning repair services and communication. This can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your expectations for quality and responsiveness.

This article will provide a factual overview of International Bicycle Shop, detailing its location and accessibility, the services it offers, and a balanced look at its features and highlights, drawn directly from public customer reviews. Our goal is to equip you with the information needed to consider whether this shop is the right fit for your specific cycling needs in Michigan.

Location and Accessibility
International Bicycle Shop is located at 5640 Middlebelt Rd, Garden City, MI 48135, USA. This address places the shop on Middlebelt Road, a well-known north-south thoroughfare that runs through Garden City and connects to various other communities in Wayne County. Its location in Garden City makes it accessible for residents not only within the city limits but also for those in neighboring areas of Metro Detroit.

The strategic placement on Middlebelt Road ensures relatively straightforward access for customers traveling by car. Typically, businesses along such major roads offer convenient parking options, making it easy for customers to drop off bikes for service or browse the shop's offerings. Garden City itself is part of a well-established road network within southeastern Michigan, allowing for reasonable travel times from various parts of Wayne and even surrounding counties. While specific public transit routes directly to this address might vary, the general accessibility by vehicle is a key advantage. This ease of access contributes to International Bicycle Shop's ability to serve a broad segment of the Michigan cycling community.

Services Offered
International Bicycle Shop, as a local bicycle store, offers services typically associated with bike sales and repairs. Based on customer feedback, their primary services include:

  • Bicycle Sales: The shop sells bicycles, with one customer noting a positive experience when purchasing a bike. While specific brands or types of bikes sold are not detailed in the provided reviews, a general bicycle shop would typically offer a range from recreational to possibly more specialized models.
  • Bicycle Repair and Service: The shop provides repair services for bicycles. Customers have brought in bikes for various issues, including brake adjustments and structural problems. However, experiences with repair service vary significantly, with one detailed review highlighting issues with damage caused by an employee, difficulties in obtaining replacement parts, and the owner's reluctance to cover costs for damage attributed to the shop.
  • Bike Rack Sales and Installation: One positive review specifically mentions purchasing a bike rack and receiving helpful installation assistance from the shop. This indicates they also offer accessories and their installation.
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics: Customers bring bikes in for issues, expecting the shop to diagnose and fix problems. The effectiveness and professionalism of this service, particularly for complex or unexpected damage, are areas where customer experiences have differed.
  • Parts Procurement: For repairs, the shop would typically source necessary parts. However, one review indicates a challenging experience with the owner regarding the availability and responsibility for purchasing a standard replacement part for a damaged bike.

Features / Highlights
International Bicycle Shop, like many local businesses, presents a mix of features and highlights that are reflected in customer experiences.

  • Sales Experience (Positive for some): One customer had an "excellent" experience purchasing a bike and also with a subsequent bike rack purchase and installation. This suggests that for some retail transactions, the shop provides satisfactory service.
  • Assistance with Accessory Installation: The helpful installation of a bike rack, even after a "mishap" that broke the first one, indicates a willingness to provide support for accessory purchases and resolve issues. This aspect of customer support is a positive highlight.
  • Local Presence: As a long-standing establishment in Garden City, International Bicycle Shop serves as a local option for bike-related needs for residents in the area, offering a physical location for sales and service.
  • Challenges with Repair Service and Accountability: This is a significant point of concern based on one detailed negative review. Issues highlighted include:
    • Employee-caused damage to a customer's bike.
    • Lack of accountability from the owner (Robert) regarding said damage.
    • Refusal to cover the cost of a necessary replacement part, even when the damage was allegedly caused by the shop.
    • Unprofessional communication from the owner, including denial of responsibility and refusal to "fix your bike" because it was "not worth it."
    • Refusal to assist with a simple, quick fix for a stranded cyclist, even to sell the correct tool.
  • Communication Issues: The negative review strongly suggests poor communication, with the owner allegedly cutting off the customer and denying a previous phone call. This indicates an area where the customer experience can be significantly impacted.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For Michigan locals, particularly those in Garden City and surrounding areas, considering International Bicycle Shop for their cycling needs requires a nuanced perspective. Its suitability depends heavily on the specific service required and the customer's expectations, given the varied public feedback.

On one hand, for straightforward retail purchases like buying a new bicycle or a bike rack, and for subsequent installation of accessories, some Michigan customers have reported "excellent" and "helpful" experiences. This suggests that for direct sales, the shop can fulfill basic customer needs effectively. Its local presence on Middlebelt Road provides a convenient physical location for residents to browse products and make purchases without needing to travel far, which is always a plus for local shopping.

However, for bicycle repair services, Michigan locals should exercise caution and set clear expectations. The detailed negative reviews highlight significant concerns regarding alleged employee-caused damage, a perceived lack of accountability from the owner, challenges with securing necessary parts, and unsatisfactory communication. These experiences, if indicative of a broader pattern, could lead to frustration and additional costs for customers seeking repairs, especially for more valuable or complex bicycles. The reported refusal to even lend a tool for a quick fix for a stranded community member also raises questions about their commitment to basic customer assistance in urgent situations.

Therefore, while International Bicycle Shop might be a viable option for a direct purchase or for customers with very simple, non-urgent repair needs who are prepared to be explicit about terms, it is less clearly suitable for those seeking reliable, accountable, and customer-focused repair services for more significant issues. For Michigan locals, it would be prudent to proceed with caution for repairs, perhaps by discussing all terms and potential liabilities upfront, or by considering shops with a more consistently positive service record for complex work. The key takeaway is to manage expectations based on the mixed experiences shared by fellow Michigan community members.
