Friendly customer service at Ken's was always hit and miss, so I stopped going several years ago. However, I returned, recently, to see about getting an estimate for a bike tune-up, as in a ballpark price. The mechanic said he couldn't give me any estimate or information without first seeing the bike. I accepted that, but left feeling badly because he seemed irritated by my questions, like I was wasting his time. I figured he was perhaps having a bad day, so I brought the bike in a few days later. Another mechanic looked at my bicycle and was friendly and helpful. However, the same mechanic from before looked over at me with a look of irritation. I don't know if that's just his general demeanor, or what, but he seems to have a chip on his shoulder. It made the experience unpleasant and I won't be taking my bike in for repair. (Receiving an unsolicited, automated, text-reminder to bring in my bike didn't help, either.) Perhaps my expectation for consistent, friendly, customer service is too high, but considering their prices are higher than those of another local bicycle shop I checked, I can easily do without them.

They are always open and clear about the fixes that need to be done and fairly priced. They explained things to me in a clear respectful fashion and they gave me cool stickers once! I'm the type of customer who likes to stick with a business whether or not every interaction is perfect, and I don't sweat the small stuff regarding fluctuations in prices or daily service, I get it that things can't always be excellent. However, I need to explain to prospective customers why I'm not going back to Ken's. (I'm also a small business owner and know that a business needs to keep customer service up, just as I treat my own clients as always #1.)Three weeks ago I brought my wife's bike in, a rear flat tire, simple fix, almost certainly my fault for over-inflating it. At the same time I brought in my daughter's bike for new tires. Techs said they spotted a brake problem with my daughter's Target cheapo bike and would fix it. Shop charged a straight-up high amount for the services, not a problem I thought at the time because they're going to take care of me, right? I maintain good tire pressure on my wife's bike's tires after they fix it, carefully inflate to 5 PSI below the max rating, everything should be fine.First problem, six days after the shops fixes my daughter's bike, the brake locks up in the front, I look and see they haven't evened the brake pads, everything is as bad as they showed me on the shop floor. Okay, fine, a slip up, whatever, I can sort of pull the brake pads apart with my hands and it's jury-rigged.Two 20 minute bike trips several days later, my wife's rear tire blows again. I call the shop, chat with the desk:"You fixed my wife's tube three weeks ago, could you maybe please do this tube fix for free since something here isn't fixed?""I can't tell you on the phone, bring it in, maybe, maybe not, could be any number of problems affecting the tube, like the rims, etc.""I'm just looking for the tube to be replaced for free since you just fixed it and it would be expected you would have spotted other problems during the fix, but if you find anything else this time around if you let me know I can pay for a bigger fix.""Sorry, we can't promise the tube fix for free.""But you just did the very same tube, and here it is flat again.""Yeah, I know.""I've been a long-time customer of yours and I've brought all my family bikes in for repairs before.""Yeah, sorry about that.""This is not the level of service I was hoping for, you're going to lose us as customers.""Well, yeah, we're sorry about that."The tone was that they didn't care. May 16, 2025 · Crosby UnsethAbsolutely great shop. I ordered a bike through Specialized and had it assembled here. The pick-up process was quick and easy. I did have to go back a week later for an uncentered front wheel and a slight rub on the front derailer. Although, one of the staff in the repair shop was able to quickly get that fixed for me 👍.
