Hermosa Cyclery Introduce
For over five decades, Hermosa Cyclery has been an integral part of the cycling landscape in Southern California. Nestled just steps from the iconic Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail, affectionately known as "The Strand," this beloved bicycle shop in Hermosa Beach has grown to become a true institution. For Californians, especially those in the South Bay, Hermosa Cyclery represents more than just a place to buy or rent a bike; it's a hub for community, expertise, and a gateway to exploring the stunning coastline on two wheels. This article will provide a comprehensive look at Hermosa Cyclery, highlighting its rich history, convenient location, diverse services, and unique features that make it a favorite among locals.
Founded in 1974 by the beloved Harold Schumaker, known to many as "Schu," Hermosa Cyclery has cultivated a reputation built on genuine care for its customers and a deep passion for cycling. Upon Schu's passing in 2002, he willed the store to four former employees who had worked for him in the late 70s and 80s: Steve Collins, Larry Burke, Mark McNeill, and Ken Liebowitz. This extraordinary gesture speaks volumes about the familial and community-driven spirit that defines Hermosa Cyclery. They continue to carry on Schu's legacy, operating the shop with the same dedication and commitment to serving every rider who walks through their doors.
The consistent positive feedback from customers underscores Hermosa Cyclery's commitment to excellence. One happy renter shared: "Fast service, bikes in good condition, and an easy rental and return process. With options for taking your kids for a ride, they have safety helmets of all sizes for them, and comfortable seats for carrying on the bike. You can pay easily, the people there are friendly, and the store's location is very convenient for starting and ending your ride." This review highlights their efficiency, well-maintained bikes, and family-friendly approach. Another customer passionately suggested enhancements to their already great service, showing how much they value the store: "Do whatever you can to make this bike valley service on Hermosa Beach happen more often. Add some e-bike charging stations, collaborate with a couple business to sell some coffee and sandwiches/pastries, you’ll be so dangerous you won’t even know what to do with all of the business." While this specific suggestion points to aspirations, it also signifies the strong positive sentiment and trust the community places in Hermosa Cyclery's potential for growth and expanded offerings.
Hermosa Cyclery boasts an unparalleled location at 20 13th St, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254, USA. This address places it literally steps away from "The Strand," one of the world's most spectacular beachside bicycle paths. May 27, 2025 · Colin WarnJust got a new pair of grips for my bike and loved the stuff. Customer service is perfect and they put my new grips on my bike without any extra charge. And prices are very normal for this area. Not too expensive. Everybody smiles here. I'm very happy overall
Feb 18, 2024 · Onur Kaan KOÇAvoid this place for bike repairs—completely incompetent.I’ve given this shop two chances over the last two years, and both times they’ve messed things up worse than when I came in.First visit: Needed a tire replaced due to a small tear. The mechanic argued it wasn’t necessary, then suddenly changed his mind. Insisted I needed a new tube because reusing the old one was “bad practice.” Fine. I paid $75. When I got the bike back, the tire had a huge bulge. I pointed it out, and the guy shrugged and said, “Yeah, that happens sometimes.” Seriously? Only after I pressed him did he replace it—this time keeping the original tube, which he just told me was unsafe to reuse. Also, he forgot to give me my valve adapter back until I reminded him. Oh, and he confidently told me to inflate the tire to 60 PSI when the actual rating was 80. Amateur hour.Second visit: My chain was skipping in one gear. They said I needed a new chain. Fine. Later, they call and say, oops, the new chain didn’t fix it, so I actually need a new cassette—which they don’t have. I get charged $9 just to have my old chain put back on. Annoying, but fair mistake. Except now my chain skips in four gears instead of one.And the worst part? They took it upon themselves to adjust my brakes—something I never asked for—because they were “rubbing.” Well, thanks to their “free” service, my rear brake now randomly locks up while riding and completely seizes if I use it, forcing me to stop and roll backward to fix it. Now I have to go to a real bike shop and pay to undo their mess.Bottom line: These people don’t know a thing about bike repairs. They rent bikes, but they should not be working on them. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that actually knows what they’re doing
Mar 23, 2025 · Ivan PushkarskyBeen here many times to get my bike serviced. The staff is always so friendly and helpful without any expectations in return. A friend of mine put my new bike together and put the front fork on backwards 😕after claiming that he knows what he’s doing and has done this many’s times before. 🤦🏽♀️Came to Hermosa Cyclery and they totally set me straight. Definitely the go to place for servicing your bike needs. 😃 👍🏽
