**1 OAK Bicycles** offers a highly specialized suite of services that cater to the discerning cyclist looking for something truly unique or aiming to restore a beloved classic. Their approach is far from traditional, focusing on custom work and unparalleled attention to detail.
- Custom-Curated Bicycle Builds: This is the core of their offering. Eric specializes in ground-up custom builds based on new, used vintage, modern, and re-imagined framesets. The goal is to create "one-of-a-kind" bicycles tailored to the rider's specific needs and desires, ensuring no two bikes are ever the same.
- Vintage Bicycle Restoration (Classiche): They provide unrivaled restoration services, sparing no expense in creating absolute perfection for any make or model. This includes minor/major structural and cosmetic repairs, consultation with original manufacturers, creating exact replica logos, graphics, and paint, and global sourcing of New Old Stock (NOS) and period-correct parts.
- Vintage Bike Rebuilds for Riding (Patina): For vintage bikes intended to be ridden and enjoyed, they offer rebuilds where only period-correct (or period-appropriate) parts are sourced. They also provide official L'Eroica approved builds upon request, catering to specific event requirements.
- Neo-Retro Builds: This category involves a playful juxtaposition of old and new, creatively pairing classic frames (steel, aluminum, carbon, titanium) with modern components and materials to create a fresh aesthetic and enhanced performance.
- Redux Builds: Starting from new and new old stock production frames, each Redux bike is custom-built to a customer's specific needs and desires. Eric spends time understanding the rider to select the perfect frame platform and hand-select every component for a truly custom and curated bike.
- Mutt Bike - House Brand: They have an exclusive house brand called "Mutt Bike" – cost-conscious bikes crafted from multiple "breeds" of frames, forks, and components. These bikes range from subtle to hip & trendy, each including a numbered dog tag, offering quirky and cool options.
- Component Sourcing and Consultation: With a deep knowledge base spanning from 1980 to present, Eric provides expert consultation and assists with global sourcing of specific components for projects.
- Service Inquiries (Existing Customers): While not advertising traditional shop service, maintenance, or repair to the general public, they do welcome inquiries, especially for existing customers who have purchased bicycles from 1 OAK, showing a commitment to supporting their custom builds.
- Velo Lounge Experience: The shop features a "Velo Lounge" – a space for cyclists to relax, immerse themselves in cycling culture and history, grab a book, listen to music, and enjoy complimentary Nespresso and Peroni beer. It's a place to talk bikes, share stories, and learn.

1 OAK Bicycles Reviews
While I didn't get to visit the shop directly I was able to obtain a perfectly spec'd Trek Crockett 7 CX/Gravel bike from 1 Oak. It's made it through quite a few adventures and mixed surface centuries on the east coast and most recently, it made it through the 210 mile Coast to Coast Gravel Grinder across the state of Michigan. I did move the front ring from a 42 to 46 for local riding but I went back to the spec'd 42 for Michigan and boy am I glad I did. 1 Oak did a perfect job building this bike up for what I wanted it to do. The only change I did to this bike prior to the C2C was add 44 Rene Herse/Compass Snoqualmie Pass Tires...fyi, "YES" a Crockett 7 frame can accommodate up to 42 width tires and apparently 44 width Rene Herse/Compass Snoqualmie Pass (although they only measured 43). Thanks again 1 Oak, someday I'll make to to the shop to say thanks in person! It was a great experience and can't wait for more adventures...possibly the Hell Hole in SC and/or NC CX season.....thank you again!!! The first photo is the Trek w/the 46t ring in SC, the second photo, is before the C2C....ignore the two dudes with Specialized's and old Project 1 Trek I didn't notice my Crockett wasn't in the shot....they were just jealous.
Jun 30, 2019 · K *If you love bicycles, and especially if you love vintage bicycles, you absolutely must visit Eric at 1 OAK Bicycles. ("Vintage" doesn't mean antique, but 1970's and 80's.) Eric restores and enhances bikes to be better than they were to begin with. And you couldn't meet a nicer guy. Take a drive to Paoli, visit 1 OAK Bicycles, and you'll be glad you did.
Feb 18, 2024 · Rodd HallChill spot worth a stop when in Paoli! Helped me in a pinch and lovely to chat with.
Jun 22, 2025 · Taylor WienkesI met with Eric a few times this summer to put new parts on an old Trek 750 Multitrack (1990). He did an amazing job taking an old frame and getting brand new components on it. Was very receptive to feedback and any ideas I had while also having a variety of options to choose from. This was my dad's old bike but has been sitting in absolute disrepair for the past 5 years, so it feels nice to have something to use on the trails out here in the Madison area. Great service and great work. Highly recommended! (He also has great taste in music.)*** Updating. I had paid although my project wasn't yet 100% complete. Tried to call him about a dozen times in the months after having paid and left some voice mail messages. None of them were returned. Totally ghosted. Not sure if he just closed down the business or what happened there.
Sep 14, 2021 · Chris WittLike the other reviews, I agree Eric has an amazing depth of bicycle knowledge as well as history. What he also has is an almost magical ability to restore a bike and still repair and retain the original beauty, keeping it as a classic. Take a look at his bikes displayed on the wall. They've been patiently restored, ensuring any replacement parts are true to the bikes vintage and era. Eric took my own 1983 Trek 520, handbuilt in Waterloo, which had been hanging and oxidizing in an unheated garage for 30 years before I was able to retrieve it. It was in ugly shape but has a ton of sentimental value as my first real road bike. Take a look at the pictures and you'll see it's almost as if it came off the factory floor. Eric also found me a pair of Sidi shoes from that year to go with it as well. And the price was far below what I expected. You need to check 1Oak and Eric's collection for yourself
