Rochester Cycling is a local bike shop with quality products & exceptional service that I will keep returning to.Side note: I found the pricing here better than the national bike shop in town. As someone who is getting back into recreational cycling, I found the folks at Rochester Cycling to be knowledgeable about the bikes and products they sell. They are very patient and do a great job of explaining things and making recommendations. Over the course of my time in Rochester, this is the bike shop I continue to return to (just bought my third bike there).

I have come here twice now, and have left disappointed and empty-handed both times. I'm just one person and the other reviews for this shop are great, so my experiences left me scratching my head a bit. The first time, I came to purchase a bike helmet for my daughter, to support local (small specialty businesses like these are gems) and also to make sure that I was making an informed purchase. When I came in, nobody said hello to me but I found a salesperson and explained that I was looking for a bike helmet for my 5 year old. I asked if someone could help me. The clerk waved in the direction of the kids' bike helmets and said, "They're over there on that shelf." I asked if someone could help me figure out sizing, and the clerk said, "The sizing info is on the boxes, everything we have is there." He didn't come out from behind his desk. It became clear that my only option was to pick through the boxes and that I wasn't going to have help with measurements, sizing, or information about specific brands and fit. I figured this experience was simply because I was looking for a kids' helmet and that maybe they were more knowledgable about adult cycling items. Fast forward to today when I made a trip there to look for cycling shoes. I told them I was having a hard time with my cycling shoes being too tight in the forefoot and that many people recommended I go to a cycling shop to be fit for another brand. The salesperson here walked me over to the shoe wall and said, "If you know your size, you could go to the Peloton website and order straight from them." I had explained that my Peloton shoes weren't fitting me well and that was why I was there. He told me he could get someone else to help and I said that would be great. Another older gentleman came over and asked my size, I said 9, and he explained that he wasn't sure what size that would be since they run on European sizes. He didn't know what the European size was, did not offer to look it up, and said that I would probably be best off ordering a shoe in the size I needed and maybe ordering it in a wide. From my understanding, there are plenty of cycling shoes that have a different fit throughout, and I told him I didn't need a wide size, just a brand that fit a certain way, which I had heard existed based on research online. When you come to specialty shops like this, you expect that the expertise will offset the higher price point, which I was willing to pay, but after two visits here I felt quite frustrated. It seems that specialty shops like these exist for folks who either 1.) Know exactly what they're doing and want a high end shop that stocks the best gear or 2.) Know nothing and want to talk to the people who know a lot. Perhaps this shop exists for the former, but I feel like it's a miss to not try to reach the customer base that could form a long-lasting love for cycling, if only they were able to understand and procure some of the foundational gear that makes them fall in love with a new sport.

Every time I go to Rochester cycling they are incredibly helpful, answering all my questions, and I would recommend them to anyone visiting rochester! I recently got into cycling within the last year and every time I go they are always welcoming and ready to help :)
