Warm Planet Bikes Introduce
For those navigating the unique urban landscape and varied terrains of San Francisco, a reliable and knowledgeable bicycle store is an invaluable resource. Warm Planet Bikes, conveniently located on Market Street, has been a part of the city's cycling community for years, offering a range of services designed to keep riders on the road and trails safely and comfortably. This article will delve into what makes Warm Planet Bikes a go-to spot for locals seeking expert assistance with their bicycles.
Warm Planet Bikes opened its doors in 2008, initially as a bike parking facility at the Caltrain station. This origin story highlights their enduring mission: to get more people on practical bikes and reduce reliance on cars. Located on what they describe as the "second busiest bike corridor in San Francisco" and near a major transit hub, their current shop embodies this commitment to accessible and sustainable cycling.
The shop caters to a diverse clientele, from daily commuters relying on their bikes for livelihood to recreational riders exploring the city's hills and beyond. They aim to be a comprehensive resource, offering not just sales but also critical repair and maintenance services. The dedication to helping people with their cycling needs, particularly in an active cycling city like San Francisco, is a core aspect of their identity.
Warm Planet Bikes is strategically located at 1098A Market St, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA. This address places the shop at a highly accessible point in the city, at the corner of Jones Street, nestled between 6th and 7th Streets. The prime location on Market Street, known as a major cycling thoroughfare, makes it incredibly convenient for cyclists to drop off or pick up their bikes.
One of the most significant advantages of their location is its proximity to the Civic Center BART/Muni station, which is just half a block away. This makes Warm Planet Bikes easily reachable via San Francisco's extensive public transportation network, serving those who commute by bike and transit, or simply prefer not to drive. There's also a bikeshare hub directly across the street from the shop, further enhancing accessibility for quick needs or transitions.
While Market Street is increasingly car-free, which is excellent for cyclists, it's worth noting that on-street parking for cars can be challenging in the area. However, Warm Planet Bikes suggests that customers driving to the shop have found success using the 6x6 garage at 5th and Market Street for parking. The shop operates by appointment (Tuesday - Friday 10 AM - 4 PM, Saturday 10 AM - 2 PM), though they encourage customers to reach out if these times are inconvenient, demonstrating flexibility for local schedules.
- Bicycle Service and Repair: Warm Planet Bikes provides comprehensive repair and maintenance services for a wide range of bicycles. This includes everything from routine tune-ups and adjustments to more complex fixes. They emphasize their ability to fix bikes, including e-bikes, by appointment.
- E-bike Service and Repair: Specifically, Warm Planet Bikes services Bosch and Shimano e-bike systems regardless of the bike brand. For other e-bike brands/systems, they have a minimum charge paid in advance and cannot guarantee success on electronic repairs, advising customers to contact the manufacturer first to ensure tech support and documentation are available.
- Brake Conversions (Mechanical to Hydraulic): As highlighted in customer testimonials, they are capable of performing specialized upgrades, such as converting mechanical brakes to hydraulic systems, significantly enhancing safety and comfort for riders.
- Parts and Component Replacement: The shop assists with replacing damaged or worn-out bike parts, ensuring bikes are in optimal working condition. This includes fundamental components like crank arms and more complex systems.
- Local Pickup and Delivery: Warm Planet Bikes now offers local pickup and delivery services within San Francisco, with a fee ranging from $25 to $50 depending on the location. This service adds a layer of convenience for customers unable to transport their bikes to the shop.
- Customer Consultation: They emphasize communication and working with customers to understand their needs and provide appropriate solutions.
- Expertise in Specialized Conversions: A significant highlight is their capability to perform advanced upgrades like converting mechanical brakes to hydraulic systems. This showcases a high level of technical skill and offers a substantial safety and performance upgrade for many bikes, as evidenced by positive customer reviews.
- E-bike Service Capability: In an increasingly e-bike-centric city like San Francisco, their ability to service Bosch and Shimano e-bike systems is a crucial feature. While there are some limitations for other brands, their general expertise in e-bikes is valuable.
- Focus on Practical Cycling: From their origins as a bike parking facility, Warm Planet Bikes maintains a mission to get people on "practical bikes." This suggests an understanding of the needs of daily commuters and utility riders, providing solutions that prioritize functionality and reliability.
- Convenient Appointment System: By operating primarily by appointment, they aim to manage workflow efficiently and provide focused attention to each customer's bike. They also show flexibility for scheduling outside regular hours upon request.
- Location in a Cycling Hub: Being situated on Market Street, a major bike corridor, means they are easily accessible to a large volume of daily cyclists and benefit from being in a highly visible and relevant location for their business.
- Local Pickup and Delivery Service: The provision of local pickup and delivery within San Francisco demonstrates a commitment to customer convenience, especially for those with larger bikes or busy schedules.
However, it is also important to consider aspects raised by some customer feedback:
- Communication and Transparency: While one review praises great communication, another indicates challenges with notification about completed work and clarity on pricing, suggesting that communication consistency might vary.
- Pricing and Value Perception: One customer expressed concern about being charged full price for parts perceived as unnecessary and for labor that seemed excessive based on their research, indicating a need for clear communication on costs and services to manage customer expectations, especially for those whose livelihood depends on their bike.
- Parts Availability and Delays: A review mentioned delays due to incorrect parts being ordered, leading to missed work for the customer. This highlights potential challenges with inventory management or ordering processes that could impact service timeliness.

Warm Planet Bikes Reviews
Wish I could give them six stars! Kash and Ted did a fantastic job converting my brakes from mechanical to hydraulic. Great communication, very timely service and easy drop off and pick up. I can now stop on a dime and my Terratrike is a lot more safe and comfortable than it used to be. thanks so much!!! (clarification: I got the trike three years ago on craigslist. It came with the electric motor already installed in the rear hub.— it’s a great way for me to get out and about as I recover from a stroke.)
May 23, 2023 · lou NordrumI work for a food delivery service, so my bike is my livelihood and the money I do make barely gets me by. I live meagerly and day to day. The business conducted with Warm Planet Bikes meriting a single star rating was my second time doing business with them which would make me what most businesses ultimately want and value for their customer base a repeat customer. Instead of noting the value of a return customer base Warm Planet opted for a quick buck and took me for stupid which became very apparent in reviewing my invoice and thus I should also serve as a warning to anyone contemplating bringing their business to this shop. One of my crank arms was bent and u do not possess the tools to replace it myself. I was told that the cost is the same to replace both of them, so I agreed to have them both done, biting the bullet expecting to pay just slightly more then the quoted 60 odd dallars for parts plus a small amount for the labor that can be observed taking a couple of minutes in a plethora of YouTube vids compounded with the fact that I would not be able to work for the week that I would have to wait for my parts to drive this venture was going to be very expensive putting a frightning strain on my already tight finances. A week went by and still did not hear from them so I checked in to be told that they had ordered the wrong parts and that I would now have to wait more time and miss more work waiting for the new parts to arrive. 4 more days of missed work go by ( which warm Planet was made aware of ) and I give them a call to check on the status to be told that the bike was finished the day before but that I had not been notified. On top of the financial stress that WP directly made far worse , I noted in my invoice that I wasn't charged a smaller amount for the two crank arms, like I was informed one that I was charged full price for each one of which I didn't need and that I was also charged and additional $28 for labor which can be seen taking only a couple of minutes in several YouTube videos further taking advantage of a continuing customer who uses a bicycle for a living and will likely need work done in the future thus displaying that Warm Planet in no way values it's customers that they
Sep 08, 2024 · Brook TonioliI lived in the city for 15 years. This is hands down the best bike shop in the city.More affordable than many other bike shops.Their work is stellar. They were able to get a squeak out of my brakes that 4 other shops were unable to.Amazing customer service. They go above and beyond.I usually don't waste my time to write Yelp reviews but this place really deserves it.
Jul 09, 2023 · Kurt GouldmanKash and his team are super helpful. It is increasingly rare these days to find a bike shop with a "can do" spirit, especially in the Bay Area. These guys are creative and helpful. If they can't do it themselves, they know how to get it done. Recently I was in trouble because I couldn't find a critical part I needed for a bike tour. Kash was able to source it and literally saved the trip. This is the type of team you want to work with. People who love bikes and love getting people going on them!
Feb 05, 2024 · Ken PulvermanI didn’t realize this place was appointment only, but after talking to them on the phone, I want nothing more than to give them my business. So extraordinarily helpful and kind, this is my new go to bike shop for sure
