Cyclone Cycles Reviews
When My much-better-half and I temporarily relocated to the outstanding/mostly bike-friendly community of HoustonTX-USA, I naturally explored closeby bikeshops for possible attention to my “FrankenBike”. The first shop was Wesleyan Trek, where one of the most experienced floor persons, MARK, recognized me from when I had biketoured to this city in 2011–back when I was much stronger and able to pedal my beloved Doublevision. Inquiring about a specific component, I was saddened to learn that ONLY the (high quality) Trek products were sold there, and I was very relieved that there was no charge for the (Trek) air used to fill my leaky tires! I was also very pleased to be able to buy a replacement 26” x 1.5 rim because some of the seriously deplorable surface streets here had torn out spokes, leaving gasping holes. Perhaps most beneficial was Mark directing me to another bike shop (Cyclone Cycles), maybe a mile/1.6kms South on adjacent Wesaylan road that might have the SRAM part I was looking for. Trek Mark also spoke highly of the Cyclone owner/operator, also named Mark.It wasn’t long before I was at the strip mall on the North side of the Stella Link (which is what Wesleyan had become) & Bellaire, speaking with Cyclone Mark—and I quickly bought another “Joe Blow” floor pump to replace an aging floor pump (I’ve had too many experiences with mini-pumps, which may be light but simply are not able to adequately air-up tubes when biketouring in Extremely remote locations!). Daniel is his universal mechanic for everyone who walks through the door, and has as much encyclopedic knowledge of bikes/trykes/repairs as anybody anywhere.“Cyclone Cycles” is very much more aligned with my sense of bike touring/cycling/all things on 2- or 3-wheels with pedals. Upon entering, the shop seems to be a jungle of bikes, new and used, with walls completely covered by components and accouterments related to the fantastic activity of cycling. This is a similar albeit much larger version of my own “bikeport/Northside workshop” at home in the “¡Hidden Gem of the World, Crossroads of North America, anchored by El Paso, Cd. Juárez y Las Cruces!”Additional conversation with both of these gifted all-around cyclists who want only the very best for anybody walking through the door, regardless if they are novice/first-time/uncertain purchasers for themselves or their toddler children OR have vast amounts of experience acquired from decades cycling long distances/commuting such as myself, it was refreshing be among similarly-minded folk. Within the past few months, my much-better-half had voiced concerns about her Specialized “Hard Rock” becoming too difficult to get her leg over the top tube. I immediately knew the remedy: CYCLONE CYCLES. Part of the marquee had read “TRADE IN’S WELCOME”, and, after a much-needed ‘caffeinated coffee’ at fantastic COFFEE TREND, we took a bee-like route to CYCLONE CYCLES.My immediate wish came true: Cyclone Mark & expert mechanic Daniel were there, as was another long-time customer/friend of Mark (I only know him as another most knowledgeable cyclist/LSU Tiger alum), all who supported the turn in of the excellent albeit difficult to ride Hard Rock for a used Haro “Del Sol” upright 21-speed. The difference is that the well-maintained ~25 year old Haro had a downward bent top tube (not quite a mixte), enabling much easier mounting. My wife was quite happy, worth every bit of the ~$200usd we paid because, let me tell you, no matter how expensive or nice a bike you buy, if it’s not comfortable (¡especially for us older cyclists!), it ain’t going to get used, which rather defeats the whole point of independent transportation!Anyway, she’s very happy, but there is always room for improvement, and a week later, we go through the same thing, except this time she’d like the handlebars a bit higher, allowing her to sit more erect (one of the factors why I love my “FrankenBike” is that the CruzBike frameset is a recumbent, which means superior/comfortable posture all the time), being able to look ahead, not just down.
May 10, 2025 · John “Juanito Hayburg” EybergI can’t speak to the technical skills of the mechanics at Cyclone Cycles, but I can share my experience with their customer service—and unfortunately, it wasn’t a positive one.I visited the shop on a Sunday afternoon with my Pedego e-bike, hoping to get a tire repaired. The person who greeted me, an older gentleman, was not rude, but made me feel distinctly unwelcome. He expressed strong negative opinions about electric bikes and batteries, calling them hazardous and even going on a bit of a rant about how bad electric vehicles are in general. While I respect any business’s right to set their own policies, I don’t expect to be lectured or made to feel rejected for simply owning an e-bike.They told me the person who could handle e-bike tires wasn’t in that day and asked me to return early the next morning. However, they also refused to keep my bike overnight—even without the battery—again citing safety concerns. The whole interaction felt more like a warning than a welcome. If you own an e-bike, I would not recommend this shop. Customer service should be about empathy, professionalism, and making people feel comfortable. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here.
