For cyclists across Illinois, especially those in the bustling city of Chicago, finding a bicycle store that offers unique inventory, great value, and a friendly atmosphere can be a real find. Look no further than 5600 Bikes and Frames, an intriguing local establishment that has carved out a distinct niche in the cycling community. This isn't your typical shiny new bike showroom; instead, it's a haven for those who appreciate the potential in pre-loved bicycles, the thrill of a good deal, and the satisfaction of a hands-on approach to cycling.
5600 Bikes and Frames is known for its focus on used bikes and frames, often sourced from unique avenues, including police-collected abandoned bicycles. This distinctive sourcing method allows the shop to offer incredibly competitive prices, making cycling more accessible to a wider range of individuals in the Illinois area. Whether you're a seasoned mechanic looking for a project, a student on a budget needing reliable transportation, or simply someone seeking an affordable entry into cycling, this store provides an alternative to traditional retail.
Beyond the inventory, the shop cultivates an environment where customers feel empowered. There's an openness to negotiation, fostering a more personal and community-driven approach to sales. Testimonials highlight the helpfulness of staff members like Rob and Bob, who are recognized for their immediate assistance and fair pricing. This dedication to customer satisfaction, combined with a unique business model, makes 5600 Bikes and Frames a noteworthy and valuable resource for Chicago's diverse cycling population.
5600 Bikes and Frames is conveniently located at 5600 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60659, USA. This address places the shop in a well-trafficked and recognizable area of Chicago, making it quite accessible for residents throughout the city and surrounding Illinois suburbs. Western Avenue is a major north-south artery in Chicago, ensuring good visibility and relatively straightforward navigation for those looking to visit the store.
For individuals relying on public transport in Chicago, the location offers several viable options. Bus routes, such as the 49B and 155, operate along Western Avenue and nearby, with stops often just a short walk from the shop. The Chicago 'L' Red Line and Metra UP-N train line also have stations (like Loyola for the Red Line, and Peterson/Ridge for the UP-N) within a reasonable distance, requiring a short bus ride or a slightly longer walk. This multi-modal accessibility is crucial for an urban bike shop, ensuring that customers from various parts of Illinois can reach them without a car. For those driving, street parking is typically available in the vicinity, though it's always advisable to factor in urban parking conditions. The shop's presence in this accessible part of Chicago means that locals have a convenient destination for affordable bikes and frames, whether they're coming from nearby neighborhoods or further afield in the Illinois region.
5600 Bikes and Frames offers a specialized set of services and inventory that caters to a particular segment of the cycling community, focusing primarily on value and the potential for customization or DIY projects. Their offerings are distinct from a standard full-service bike shop, emphasizing affordability and unique finds.
- Used Bike Sales: The primary offering is a diverse selection of pre-owned bicycles. These bikes often come from police-collected abandoned stock, meaning a wide variety of makes, models, and conditions are available. This makes it a great place to find affordable bikes for commuting, casual riding, or as a base for a project.
- Used Frames Sales: For those who prefer to build a bike from the ground up or replace a damaged frame, the shop has a "back room crammed full of bikes" that are sold as frames or for parts. This is a significant draw for bike mechanics and DIY enthusiasts looking for specific components or a unique foundation for their build.
- Parts and Components: While not explicitly detailed, the nature of selling used and abandoned bikes implies that a variety of used parts and components would be available, either sold individually or as part of a "project bike." This is invaluable for repairs or custom builds without the cost of new parts.
- Friendly Bargaining and Negotiation: A unique feature highlighted by customers is the openness to "friendly bargaining with price if you think it's too high." This offers customers an opportunity to get even better deals, especially on items needing some work, and creates a more engaging buying experience.
- Immediate Assistance: Customers praise staff members like Rob and Bob for taking care of them "immediately." While specific repair services are not detailed, this suggests a responsiveness and willingness to assist with customer needs on the spot, particularly concerning sales and general inquiries about their unique inventory.
5600 Bikes and Frames stands out with several key features and highlights that make it a distinctive and valuable destination for cyclists in Illinois, especially those who appreciate unique opportunities and a hands-on approach.
- Affordable Used Bikes and Frames: The most prominent highlight is the availability of decent used bikes and frames at highly competitive prices. Their unique sourcing method, often from police-collected abandoned bicycles, allows them to offer bikes that are significantly more affordable than new models, making cycling accessible to more people.
- Opportunity for Bargaining: The willingness of the shop to engage in "friendly bargaining with price if you think it's too high" is a significant draw. This empowers customers to negotiate for better deals, particularly on bikes that might require some work, fostering a dynamic and customer-centric sales environment.
- Treasure Trove for DIY Mechanics: For individuals who enjoy working on bikes themselves, the "back room crammed full of bikes" that were abandoned and bought in bulk is a veritable treasure trove. This provides an excellent resource for project bikes, spare parts, and learning opportunities at a good price.
- Helpful and Accommodating Staff: Reviews consistently praise staff members like Rob and Bob for being immediately helpful and not overcharging. Their readiness to assist customers and facilitate deals, even on a "tight schedule" for certain types of interactions (like haggling), makes for a positive and supportive experience.
- Focus on Value and Accessibility: The entire business model revolves around providing value. By offering affordable used options and being open to negotiation, 5600 Bikes and Frames makes cycling more accessible to budget-conscious individuals or those looking to explore cycling without a significant upfront investment.
- Unique Inventory: Unlike typical bike shops with brand-new models, the inventory here is constantly changing and often includes unique finds. This appeals to collectors, restorers, and anyone looking for a bike with character or specific vintage components.

This stands in contrast to potentially more impersonal retail experiences, allowing local customers to build a rapport with the shop and feel confident in their purchases and projects. 5600 Bikes and Frames Reviews
Decent used bikes, open to friendly bargaining with price if you think it's too high.If you like to work on bikes like I do, they have a back room crammed full of bikes that were abandoned and collected by police, then the shop buys them in bulk. Most of them need work, more or less, and they'll let them go for a really good price. Call ahead to confirm that they'll be ready for what you want to do, someone there that's authorized to haggle, etc.
Jan 29, 2025 · John WatsonThanks to Rob and Bob I am riding today.Came in and they took care of me immediately and didn’t charge me an arm and a leg like other shops around.Thank you both for showing up.
Sep 19, 2023 · Nelson VindellRobert immediately repaired my broken front brake after noticing my front wheel had been turned 360 degrees somehow, sold me and installed a new rear view mirror, and inflated my tires - all for a very reasonable price! A no frills place that does good work. Thanks to Robert I was on my way!
May 23, 2024 · Lee KoutskyBike tire popped on Sunday late afternoon, we arrived at Bikes and Frames at 5:30pm. They fixed it while we waited, replacing the tubing, putting it all back together, in less than 15 minutes! Excellent customer service, friendly staff, this is a great place that I highly recommend!!!
Sep 19, 2022 · Malka FrazinJust don't go to this store. They will try to reap you off. For example, they will try to sell you things you don't need, such as a new set of tires and tubes when all you got is a simple flat! Also, they don't offer a good service. Instead of removing the wheels for me, they had me do that and didn't even offer help. Then, they charged me a labor fee! Finally, when I complained about a defective product, they did not wanted to acknowledge that their product was defective. I had to fix it by myself.I regret to have shopped there and I will never stop there again. Please, be aware and just chose a different bike shop.A North Park neighborPS: This happened around May 2015.
