Used Bicycle Sales: Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative's primary service is the sale of refurbished used bicycles. These bikes are typically donated, then inspected and repaired by staff and volunteers to bring them to a functional standard. This service aims to provide affordable and accessible transportation options for the community. It's important for customers to thoroughly inspect these bikes before purchase, as their nature means they are pre-owned and refurbished, not brand new from a manufacturer. As one customer's experience highlighted, it is advisable to ensure the bike meets expectations regarding condition and functionality before completing the transaction.
Bicycle Repair Services: The cooperative offers repair services for a wide range of bicycle issues. Their mechanics can address common problems such as flat tires, brake adjustments, gear tuning, chain repairs, and more complex mechanical issues. Given their cooperative model, there's often an emphasis on educating customers about the repairs being performed.
"Do-It-Yourself" Repair Stations: A unique aspect of a cooperative model like Vélocity's is often the provision of "do-it-yourself" repair stations. These stations typically include tools and stands that customers can use, sometimes for a nominal fee or donation, to work on their own bikes. Staff or volunteers are usually on hand to offer guidance and advice, empowering individuals to learn basic bike maintenance and repair skills.
Educational Workshops: Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative frequently conducts workshops and classes on various aspects of bicycle maintenance and repair. These sessions cover topics like flat tire repair, basic tune-ups, brake adjustments, and gear indexing. The goal is to equip community members with the skills needed to keep their bikes running smoothly, promoting self-sufficiency and a deeper understanding of bicycle mechanics.
Parts and Accessories Sales (New and Used): Beyond complete bicycles, the cooperative also sells new and used bicycle parts and accessories. This allows customers to find affordable components for repairs or upgrades, ranging from tires and tubes to chains, pedals, and lights. The availability of used parts further supports their mission of affordability and sustainability.
Bicycle Donations: As a non-profit, Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative actively accepts donated bicycles from the community. These donations are then refurbished and put back into circulation, contributing to their mission of providing affordable transportation and reducing waste.
Volunteer Opportunities: For those interested in getting involved, Vélocity offers volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can learn bike mechanics, assist with repairs, and contribute to the cooperative's mission, fostering a strong sense of community and shared purpose.
Community-Oriented Mission: Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative is driven by a strong non-profit mission to promote cycling as a sustainable and accessible mode of transportation. This community focus means they prioritize affordability, education, and resource sharing over pure profit, setting them apart from conventional retail bike shops.
Affordable Cycling Options: By refurbishing and selling used bikes, the cooperative provides an invaluable service for individuals and families on a budget, making cycling more accessible to a wider demographic within the Virginia community.
Emphasis on Education and Empowerment: A significant highlight is their dedication to teaching customers how to maintain and repair their own bikes. Through workshops and hands-on guidance at their repair stations, they empower individuals with practical skills, fostering independence and a deeper connection to their bicycles.
Sustainable Practices: By extending the life of donated bicycles and reusing parts, Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative champions environmental sustainability. They contribute to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy within the cycling industry.
Good Selection (Often): As one customer review noted, the cooperative generally has a "Good selection" of bikes. While inventory can fluctuate due to the nature of donations, they often have a variety of styles and sizes available for different needs.
Location Advantage: Despite some potential service issues, their "Good selection and location" are consistent positive points, making them a convenient option for many in Arlington and surrounding areas.
Volunteer-Driven Ethos: The involvement of volunteers in their operations contributes to their community feel and their ability to offer services at lower costs. This model can lead to a passionate and dedicated team, even if individual experiences may vary at times.

Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative Reviews
Bought a bike for 300, one week later the chain breaks on my third ride. Buy from some other businesses please. 300 for this trash, it’s not guaranteed that they checked all the bikes to make sure they were up to “standard”, even my first bike I kinda felt the chain and gears not really working properly but I decided I’ll just fix it later. Well now I wish I had went back that day to get my money back. How does a chain just snap if it wasn’t defective? Litterally I didn’t even change any gears. Just started peddling and crack chain pops off. I recommend looking at Craigslist, prob could have gotten a better value bike that actually worked. Now I have to haul this trash to another shop to get it fixed. I haven’t even rode this bike for more than one hour. It’s absolutely insane, feel like I got scammed.
May 17, 2025 · abdul malikI had a disappointing experience at this shop. The staff member I spoke with was unexpectedly curt, and I’m still not sure why. I found a bike I was ready to purchase, but was turned away because he couldn’t find the key to unlock the rack outside. It was a frustrating interaction and left me questioning how seriously they take potential customers. Good selection and location though.

Mar 11, 2025 · George LadnerHad a great visit after I realized my tire was flat. It's a quaint neighborhood place with friendly service. Staff went above and beyond ensuring there was nothing in the tire, oiling the chain, and fixing it quickly while I waited. Price was very affordable. I would highly recommend for any bicycle maintenance!
