I have thought long and hard about posting the review. I do not like giving bad reviews to businesses. But these guys are just terrible. I brought my bike in for a tune up. That was the last time this summer (the whole summer) that it worked. $365 and one week later (new chain, cassette, and a host of other things) I got bike back. Within 50 miles my drive train suffered a catastrophic failure with the chain coming apart and tearing off the derailluer stranding me. I brought it back in, I told them what happened and without looking at it, the guy said, "that's not what happened". Of course it is what happened and they agreed once they actually looked at it. They said that I needed a new bottom bracket. Waited 2 weeks. I said then that I was surprised that the rear derailleur was not damaged. They insisted it was not. Got the bike back, and in the first 8 miles, the rear detailer tore off stranding me again. They then said the derailleur was damaged (it was not visible damage) and replaced it (actually a decent one). One week later when I got it back, the guy said, "if this does not fix it then I have no idea". As soon as I got it back, the drive train was making noises but I thought it would just break in. Gradually over the next 50 miles, the drive train was increasingly clicking and skipping. So fed up and lacking any confidence in these guys knowing how to fix a bike, I took it to another bike shop. Bottom line, Tuckahoe had put back on the chain that had broken and the pin did not connect through and it had a kink. Extremely dangerous (See picture). It damaged the new cassette. I also found out that the deraulleur was not installed correctly. You need to align it with the wheel. It is simple to do and the misalignment was significant. The derailleur was also improperly tightened. If the chain had failed, I could have been thrown over the handle bars. In my many years of riding (and over 12 years on this bike) I have never had an experience like that. All I can say is that you are forewarned. - William Eisenstadt

Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield Introduce

For residents and cycling enthusiasts across New Jersey, particularly in the Atlantic County area, finding a local bicycle shop that can address your cycling needs is often a top priority. Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield aims to be a resource for bicycle sales and service within the community of Northfield. As a local establishment, it seeks to provide an accessible option for those looking to purchase a new bicycle or require maintenance and repairs for their existing one.

Operating within the local landscape of bike shops, Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield positions itself as a point of contact for riders in the region. The shop's presence in a shopping mall setting suggests a focus on convenience and accessibility for everyday customers. Like any local business, it strives to serve the needs of its community, providing essential services to keep people cycling.

Location and Accessibility

Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield is located at London Square Mall, 201 Tilton Rd suite 20, Northfield, NJ 08225, USA. This location within the London Square Mall in Northfield, Atlantic County, New Jersey, offers a degree of accessibility and convenience for shoppers. Tilton Road (Route 563) is a major thoroughfare in the area, providing straightforward access to the mall.

Being situated within a mall typically means ample parking is available, which can be a significant advantage for customers bringing in bicycles for service or picking up new ones. The mall setting also places the bike shop among other retail establishments, allowing for combined errands. Northfield's position in Atlantic County makes the shop reachable for residents from surrounding towns, including Somers Point and other coastal communities that often have active cycling scenes. The ease of access via a main road and the convenience of a mall location contribute to its overall accessibility for the local New Jersey community.

Services Offered

Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield, as a local bicycle store, would typically offer a range of services encompassing both sales and repairs to cater to the needs of its clientele. Based on standard bike shop operations, the services generally include:

  • Bicycle Sales: Offering a selection of bicycles, likely including various types such as road bikes, mountain bikes, and potentially other categories to suit different riding styles. While specific brands are not provided, bike shops typically carry popular or regional brands.
  • Bicycle Repair and Maintenance: Providing services for bike tune-ups, addressing issues with drivetrains (chains, cassettes, derailleurs), brakes (pads, calipers, fluid), wheels (truing, tire/tube replacement), and other general maintenance. This would include diagnosing problems and performing necessary adjustments or part replacements.
  • Accessory Sales: Offering a range of bicycle accessories, such as tubes, and potentially other common items like helmets, lights, or pumps, to support cyclists' needs.
  • Bike Assembly and Setup: For bikes purchased through them, or potentially for direct-to-consumer bikes, offering assembly and initial setup.

It is important to note that customer experiences with these services can vary. While a bike shop aims to provide comprehensive repair, issues such as incorrect installations, persistent problems after service, or damage during repair have been reported by customers. One detailed review highlighted multiple instances of mechanical failures following a tune-up, including a chain coming apart, derailleur issues, incorrect brake pad installation, and un-reset brake caliper pistons, leading to significant dissatisfaction and safety concerns. This suggests that while services are offered, customers might want to engage in clear communication about expectations and thoroughly inspect their bikes upon pickup.

Features / Highlights

Tuckahoe Bike Shop Northfield, as a local bicycle store, presents certain characteristics that define its operation within the New Jersey cycling landscape.

  • Local Presence in Northfield: Its physical location within the London Square Mall in Northfield makes it an accessible option for residents in Atlantic County, providing a convenient local point for bicycle needs.
  • Accessibility within a Mall Setting: The mall location offers the advantage of ample parking and being part of a larger retail complex, potentially combining a visit to the bike shop with other errands.
  • Direct Customer Interaction: As a physical store, it allows for in-person consultation for bike sales and direct drop-off/pickup for repairs.

However, it is crucial for potential customers to be aware of the varied customer experiences reported. Some critical feedback highlights concerns regarding:

  • Quality of Service and Repair Accuracy: One extensive review described a series of significant mechanical failures and incorrect repairs following a tune-up, including a chain that broke due to improper installation, a misaligned and improperly tightened derailleur, and incorrectly installed brake pads with un-reset pistons. This led to multiple breakdowns and safety concerns.
  • Customer Service Demeanor: Another customer reported dealing with a "long-haired man" who was "incredibly dismissive and condescending," insinuating that pre-existing damage was brought in and showing a lack of helpfulness towards patrons, including children. This suggests inconsistencies in the professional and friendly approach expected in customer service.
  • Bike Handling During Service: A specific complaint mentioned a brand new $6k bike being "completely filthy when I picked it up, grease and other residue covering top and seat tubes," and cracked paint on the front wheel due to over-torquing during service. This raises concerns about the care taken with customers' property.
  • Transparency and Accountability: The refusal to acknowledge initial issues without visual inspection, insistence that visible damage wasn't present when it was, and the refusal to issue a refund for an incorrect part, as mentioned in one review, indicate potential challenges with accountability.

These varied experiences indicate that while the shop offers a local option, customers should approach with a clear understanding of what to expect and consider careful communication regarding service details and outcomes.
