Ruckus Composites Introduce
For cyclists in Oregon, particularly those who invest in high-performance carbon fiber bicycles, a damaged frame can be a devastating and costly blow. This is where Ruckus Composites steps in as an indispensable and highly specialized resource in Portland. Unlike traditional bike shops that primarily focus on mechanical repairs and sales, Ruckus Composites has carved a unique niche by dedicating its expertise to the precise and robust repair of carbon fiber bicycle frames. They are the true saviors for riders whose beloved bikes have suffered from crashes, impacts, or manufacturing defects, offering a viable and often superior alternative to expensive frame replacements.
Founded in 2008 by Shawn Small, an owner and engineer with a deep love for bicycle technology and a background in mechanical engineering, Ruckus Composites has evolved to become a leader in the carbon repair industry. Their approach is rooted in scientific precision, utilizing techniques and standards often found in the aerospace industry to ensure the structural integrity and longevity of every repair. What customers repeatedly highlight is not just the technical prowess, but also the genuine appreciation and commitment the team shows in getting riders back on their bikes with confidence. Ruckus Composites understands that a bicycle is more than just a piece of equipment; it's a gateway to adventure, fitness, and passion for the Oregon cycling community.
Ruckus Composites is located at 3380 SE 20th Ave, Portland, OR 97202, USA. This address places the workshop in Southeast Portland, an area known for its diverse businesses, local charm, and accessibility. While not a typical retail storefront for new bike sales, its specialized nature means customers often travel from across Oregon and beyond to utilize their unique services.
For locals in Portland, the SE 20th Ave location offers reasonably straightforward access. It is situated within a network of streets that are generally navigable by car, and street parking in the vicinity is typically available, though availability can vary. For cyclists, Southeast Portland is quite bike-friendly, with many routes and bike lanes making it feasible to transport a damaged frame to the shop. However, given the nature of the service (repairing damaged frames), many customers will likely opt for vehicle transport or shipping their frames to Ruckus. For those relying on public transport, TriMet bus routes likely serve the general area, providing connectivity to other parts of the city. While specific access details for dropping off frames should be confirmed directly with Ruckus Composites, their business hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, allowing ample time for drop-offs and consultations.
Ruckus Composites specializes exclusively in the highly technical and precise field of carbon fiber composite repair and inspection for bicycles. Their services are designed to restore damaged frames to (or even exceed) their original structural integrity and aesthetic appeal:
Precision Carbon Fiber Bicycle Frame Repair: This is their core service. Ruckus Composites repairs a wide range of damage to carbon frames, from cracks and delaminations caused by crashes (e.g., mountain bike crashes, road accidents) to defects. They utilize a scientifically advanced process, developed from aerospace industry standards, involving:
- Damage Assessment: Each repair begins with a thorough inspection using advanced non-destructive technology, including phased array ultrasound scanning, infrared, acoustic feedback, and fluorescent penetrant dyes. This allows them to "see below the surface" to accurately map the extent, size, and depth of the damage, even barely visible impact damage (BVID), which is crucial for a complete repair plan.
- Damage Removal & Material Matching: All damaged material is precisely removed. They then design a custom "tapered composite repair plan" and create a personalized carbon fiber layup schedule. They source high-quality, aerospace-grade prepreg carbon fiber (often from the same companies used by original manufacturers) and ensure it perfectly matches the original frame's design intent and material properties.
- Casting and Compression: Custom-cut prepreg carbon fiber sheets are meticulously applied. The repaired area then undergoes precise heat curing and vacuum pressure (achieving a 99.9% vacuum), which ensures optimal fiber-to-resin ratio and creates exceptionally strong bonds.
Carbon Fiber Inspection & Diagnostics: Beyond just repair, Ruckus offers comprehensive inspection services using their cutting-edge ultrasound technology. This service can be used to assess the condition of a frame after a crash, identify hidden damage, or simply provide peace of mind about a used carbon bike. They credit a portion of the inspection fee towards the repair cost if a repair is pursued.
Aesthetic Restoration & Repainting: Ruckus Composites understands that aesthetics are important. After the structural repair, they offer two main finishing options:
- Raw Carbon Finish: The repaired area is left with the raw carbon fiber exposed, which some customers choose as a "badge of honor" or for cost savings.
- Repair & Restore (Paint Match): They can meticulously repaint the repaired area to match the original factory finish, including color and graphics. They use low-VOC, water-based urethane paint systems and hand-match colors to ensure a seamless restoration, making the repair virtually invisible.
Custom Modifications & Reinforcement: In some cases, they can strategically reinforce repaired areas to be stronger than the original factory condition, particularly in high-stress zones. They can also perform custom add-ons or modifications.
Lifetime Guarantee: All Ruckus Composites' repairs are backed by an industry-leading, transferable lifetime warranty against defects in the repaired area, offering significant peace of mind to customers.
Aerospace & Industrial Composite Work: While primarily known for bicycles, their expertise extends to composite repair and inspection for aerospace and other industrial applications, highlighting their advanced capabilities and rigorous standards.
Ruckus Composites boasts several remarkable features and highlights that position it as a leader in its specialized field and a valuable asset for the Oregon cycling community:
Aerospace-Grade Precision & Technology: Ruckus Composites applies cutting-edge techniques and equipment derived from the aerospace industry to bicycle frame repair. This includes advanced phased array ultrasound scanning to detect hidden damage, precise material layups, and controlled heat curing and vacuum pressure for optimal bonding. This scientific approach ensures repairs are not just cosmetic but structurally sound and often stronger than the original.
Proven Strength and Durability: Customer testimonials repeatedly confirm the exceptional strength and reliability of Ruckus's repairs. One reviewer explicitly states their repaired mountain bike was "probably stronger than it was from the factory" and has withstood "multiple drops and jumps that would have folded the frame if the repair wasn’t solid." This demonstrates a commitment to not just fixing, but enhancing, the integrity of damaged frames.
Transferable Lifetime Guarantee: Offering an industry-leading, transferable lifetime warranty against defects in the repaired area is a significant highlight. This provides immense peace of mind for customers, demonstrating Ruckus's confidence in their work and adding considerable value to the repair service.
Aesthetic Restoration Expertise: Beyond structural integrity, Ruckus pays "attention to detail and awareness for aesthetics of the finish product." Their ability to meticulously repaint and match factory colors and graphics, or to provide a clean raw carbon finish, ensures that the repaired frame looks as good as new, or even better as a "badge of honor."
Cost-Effective Alternative: Repairing a carbon frame for approximately $700, as one customer noted, is a highly cost-effective solution compared to purchasing a new $7,000 bike. This makes high-performance cycling more accessible and sustainable for Oregon riders.
Quick Turnaround Times: While complex, customers have reported the "whole process was very quick and easy," suggesting efficient operations and communication throughout the repair. Most repairs are completed within two to three weeks, with expedited service available.
Exceptional Customer Service & Communication: Reviewers praise the "super chill" crew, their knowledge, and their frequent "customer service and updates" throughout the process. This transparent and friendly approach builds trust and ensures customers are well-informed at every stage of the repair.

Ruckus Composites Reviews
I don’t leave reviews unless I feel the need to share genuine appreciation. These guys saved my mtn bike season. I crashed and couldn’t afford another 7k bike. They fixed my damaged frame for $700 and it’s honestly probably stronger than it was from the factory. Just leaving this message to say thank you for getting me back on the bike and shredding with confidence. If you are at all hesitant about their ability to repair your frame don’t be because my mtn bike was trash after a crash and they completely restored it to new condition. I have hit multiple drops and jumps that would have folded the frame if the repair wasn’t solid. Thank you so much Ruckus! They have a machine that can show you where the carbon weave is damaged. I also appreciated their attention to detail and awareness for aesthetics of the finish product which I appreciated very much. I decided to leave the carbon exposed to save money but it’s honestly like a badge of honor. They can also repaint and get your frame looking like it was before the repair if you want them too!
Jun 14, 2025 · Peter JohnsonThanks to the carbon repair by Ruckus, I can finally ride my mountain bike again! The whole process was very quick and easy, and they did a beautiful job with the repair. Customer service and updates were frequent throughout the whole process. Highly recommend these guys for any of your carbon repair needs!
Jan 09, 2025 · Shayna Ankou10/10 Service. One of those things that you hope you never have to use again, but when you need to fix your carbon this is the company to go with. Great service, great product, and super easy to work with. Everything went extremely smooth from quotes to shipping to payment and receiving my bike frame back. Thanks Jakob and Ruckus 👍👍
May 10, 2025 · D MooreI broke the seat stay of my Pinarello. From the first point of contact till the bike was repaired and shipped back (I live close to the other coast), they were extremely professional, and took good care of the bike. The repair process itself took around how long they said it would, so no delays from their side. The paint work turned out really well. Once the bike was fully built up and after I applied a coat of Muck Off bike spray, it's almost indistinguishable from the original.
Feb 26, 2019 · Sharath PendyalaRuckus did a fantastic job touching up some scuffs on my Felt AR1 fork after a minor incident. You cannot tell that a repair has been performed and it looks as good as it came from the factory with the color and artwork perfectly matched. The company is also responsive and professional when it comes to e-mail correspondence and quoted me the best price vs other well known competitors. Highly recommended
