Metropolis Cycle Repair Introduce
For the vibrant and diverse cycling community of Portland and across Oregon, having a reliable and efficient bike shop is paramount. Metropolis Cycle Repair, located on the bustling N Williams Avenue, has quickly become a beloved go-to for many local riders. Known for their exceptional service, fast turnaround times, and a genuinely knowledgeable and "super chill" crew, Metropolis Cycle Repair offers a refreshing experience for anyone needing bike maintenance, repairs, or looking for new gear.
Established on November 1st, 2008, by Nathan Roll, and now owned by Brad Parker (who has been with the shop for 15 years), Metropolis Cycle Repair has grown from a one-man operation to a dedicated team of four full-time mechanics. Their core business model has always centered around service, with a passion for keeping Portland's commuters on their bikes. This commitment to functionality and reliability, combined with a friendly demeanor, has solidified their reputation as a community hub where everyone feels welcome. Whether you're a daily commuter, a weekend trail rider, or someone just getting into cycling, Metropolis Cycle Repair strives to be the place where your "adventure" on two wheels remains swift, silent, and pleasant.
Metropolis Cycle Repair is strategically situated at 2249 N Williams Ave, Portland, OR 97227, USA. This location is a major highlight for the shop, as N Williams Avenue is often described as a central artery for bike commuters traveling between the Northeast and North quadrants of the city. For many Portlanders, especially those who rely on bikes for daily transportation, the shop's position makes it incredibly convenient for dropping off bikes for repairs before or after work, or simply stopping by during a ride.
The shop is "fairly open and spacious" on the ground level, suggesting good physical accessibility. Being on a prominent bike arterial means direct access for cyclists, who will find it easy to integrate a visit into their routes. Beyond cycling, N Williams Ave is generally well-served by Portland's TriMet bus system, offering public transport options for customers without bikes or those needing to leave their bike for an extended repair. While street parking availability can vary in urban areas, the focus on direct bike access and the general walkability/bikeability of the neighborhood contribute to its overall accessibility for the local Oregon community.
Metropolis Cycle Repair is a full-service bike shop with a strong emphasis on keeping bikes in top working order. Their comprehensive range of services caters to a wide variety of cycling needs, from quick fixes to extensive overhauls:
General Bicycle Repair & Maintenance: They handle everything from simple flat tire repairs (often done in under 40 minutes, even when busy) to more complex, high-end repairs. This includes brake adjustments, shifting adjustments, and overall mechanical troubleshooting for all types of bikes.
Tune-Up Services: Metropolis offers comprehensive tune-up packages, including a "Tune Up" for $165, which features a full drivetrain cleaning (removal and cleaning of chainrings, chain, derailleurs, and gears in a non-toxic parts washer), wheel truing, adjustment of all bearings, brakes, and shifting. This service also notably includes the installation of all parts purchased from the shop (e.g., brake pads, chain, cassette, bottom bracket, handlebar tape/grips, cables) at no additional labor cost.
Complete Overhaul: For bikes needing a thorough refresh, the "Complete Overhaul" at $250 involves a complete disassembly down to the frame, thorough cleaning of all components, overhaul of hubs, bottom bracket, and headset with fresh grease, followed by a full tune-up. This is recommended every two years in Oregon's often wet environment to keep bikes feeling like new.
E-bike Diagnostics & Service: As a Bosch Certified shop, Metropolis Cycle Repair is authorized to run computer diagnostics and perform repairs on all Bosch-powered e-bikes (specifically Class 1 e-bikes with pedal assist, no throttles or Class 2/3). They can hook up your e-bike to a computer, address issues, and update firmware as needed.
Suspension Service: Their service manager and "ace suspension tech Archie" specialize in suspension work, offering services like rear shock seal replacement ($40) and wiper seal service on forks ($60). They are also Fox and Rock Shox dealers and can service most other major brands.
Custom Wheel Building: They pride themselves on building custom wheels, allowing customers to choose from a wide array of rims (Mavic, DT Swiss, Velocity, H+ Son, Sun, Alex, Velo Orange) and hubs (Shimano, Chris King, White Industries, Paul, Schmidt, All-City, and more) for $75 per wheel (plus parts).
Bike Assembly & Disassembly: They offer professional assembly for new bikes, including those bought online that claim to be "90 percent assembled" (they disassemble and properly reassemble, including wheel truing and bearing adjustments). They also provide partial disassembly and packaging for shipping or travel ($125, includes box and packing material), and reassembly after travel.
Custom Bike Builds: For those dreaming of a unique ride, Metropolis offers complete custom bike builds starting at $250 and up, handling everything from internal routing to Di2 installation and providing custom parts consultation.
Tubeless Tire Setup: ($25 per wheel, plus parts) includes rim taping, sealant installation, and proper bead seating, often kept overnight to ensure a proper seal.
Collision Estimates: For insurance purposes, they provide thorough inspection and printed estimates of damages and repair costs for $35, which is applied to labor costs if the bike is repaired at the shop.
Sales: While service is primary, they also offer a "cool selection of bikes and gear," including All Road, Commuter, Kids, Mountain, and Class 1 eBikes. They focus on quality, such as the Kona Dew for its value.
Metropolis Cycle Repair boasts several key features that make it a standout choice for Portland and Oregon cyclists:

This creates a welcoming and unintimidating environment, where customers feel comfortable asking questions and receiving expert advice without being rushed or upsold.

The "quick once-over" they provide even for minor repairs demonstrates a dedication to thoroughness and customer safety, making sure "everything was solid." This commitment to "exceptional service" is a recurring theme in reviews.

Specialization in E-bike and Suspension Service: Their Bosch certification for e-bike diagnostics and specialized suspension tech "Archie" are significant draws for riders with these advanced components, offering expert care that might not be available at every general bike shop.
Fair Prices and Value: Customers appreciate the "fair prices" and "affordable rate" for the quality of service provided. The value added by services like inclusive parts installation in tune-up packages further enhances their appeal.

Metropolis Cycle Repair Reviews
Took my old bike in for a new tire and they had it done in under 40 minutes, even though they’re packed and booked out for bigger repairs. Super chill and knowledgeable crew — they even gave it a quick once-over just to make sure everything was solid. Fair prices, cool selection of bikes and gear. Definitely my go-to from now on.
Jun 15, 2025 · Brandon GuzmánI recently started going to Metropolis and they have saved my bacon twice now with exceptional service and a very fast turnaround.Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable, plus they have an excellent selection of bikes and accessories.Stop in and check them out!
Apr 07, 2025 · Jaime ReedI was out for a ride after work and started having issues with what I felt was my free hub slipping. On my way home, I came upon the metropolis cycle shop and decided to drop by, unannounced, to see if I could get a mechanics opinion. Not only were they happy to look at it for me but they spotted my problem right away and offered to fix it on the spot. Turned out to be a stuck chain link but they took time to help me get back on the road at a very minimal cost. That was excellent customer service by truly going out of their way. If I sent out Xmas cards, this shop would be on my list, but since I don't, they get this review instead.
May 09, 2025 · owen grauBrought my bike in to get a tune up, didn't get it back same day but the next day, went to make a minor adjustment on my seat.. turns out the saddle clamp is stripped. This wasn't mentioned at all while they had my bike in their shop. So they either didn't notice it was stripped, did notice and didn't say anything, or did it themselves and didn't say anything. So why did i pay for a tune up with such an obvious oversight? And why does my bike still need work after it came fresh out of their shop? I don't know.edit to reply to owner:lol. Did you even read what i wrote? Why would I bring my bike back to your shop when you've already demonstrated that you 1) don't know what you're doing or 2) are completely comfortable scamming people?Take care. All the best.
Apr 25, 2025 · Justin Van AusdelnCame in looking for some bike accessories, staff was very knowledgeable, unfortunately they were very condescending and not very encouraging to a new rider. Prices were good. Overall a good spot to go if you’re deep into the lifestyle it seems. Just wish they were a bit better at customer service.Edit: Much better experience following visit, had an Accessory I was looking for that was out of stock on all the online shops!
