Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Point Reyes Station, this establishment is more than just a place to buy a bicycle; it's a hub for enthusiasts, a workshop for meticulous repairs, and a source for unique, high-quality custom frames designed for adventure.
In a world where many bike shops prioritize volume, Black Mountain Cycles embraces the unmistakable "feel" of a traditional, mechanic-based shop. Imagine walking in and being greeted by an owner deeply involved in the craft, surrounded by the familiar scents of tires and chain lube. That's the essence of Black Mountain Cycles, where making bikes work better is paramount. This focus on individual attention and expert craftsmanship resonates deeply with local riders and those who travel from across the Bay Area for their services.
The shop specializes in 'adventure bikes' – versatile machines built to tackle any road surface, from smooth pavement to challenging dirt and gravel. This particular expertise makes Black Mountain Cycles a perfect fit for the diverse riding terrain found throughout California, from the coastal roads to the scenic trails of West Marin.
Black Mountain Cycles is conveniently located at 11101 CA-1, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956, USA. Situated on scenic California State Route 1, the shop is approximately thirty miles north of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This prime location places it in one of the most celebrated cycling regions in the country.
Point Reyes Station itself is a popular destination for thousands of cyclists annually, ranging from recreational riders enjoying leisurely tours to dedicated randonneurs and racers on training rides. The area boasts an incredible array of beautiful routes that wind through the valleys and hills of West Marin. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the flanks of Mt. Tamalpais, known as the birthplace of the mountain bike, are a mere 30 minutes away, making Black Mountain Cycles an ideal stop for any type of rider exploring the Northern California landscape.
While Point Reyes Station might not be centrally located for all Bay Area residents, many clients willingly make the journey for the shop's renowned service. Visitors can either wait for their bike repairs (and explore the local restaurants and hiking trails) or leave their bike for later pickup, perhaps returning for another ride in West Marin on their newly serviced or custom-assembled bike.

Black Mountain Cycles Reviews
I was fortunate to pick up one of the last Molteni Orange Road frames from Mike and absolutely love it. It is more comfortable and fits bigger tires than all of my previous road bikes and somehow is faster too. Riding that bike just makes me want to ride it more - it is an awesome frame.Buying online from Mike was easy, his communication was great, and he laid out good options for fit and sizing. When it's time to replace my other bike I'll definitely be looking at Mike's other models.
Feb 29, 2024 · Simon ThwaitsPurchased a Monster Cross frame set from BMC ! Mike was extremely helpful. Sent me a couple of very detailed drawings to help me narrow down the size. Could not be happier with the bike !
Jun 04, 2018 · PMike is an excellent mechanic, wheel builder and designer. He has creative solutions for most any "problem" you throw his way. He understands how important your bike is to you. Give him a heads up and he will get you back up and rolling very quickly. He's a real mensch!
Jul 15, 2023 · Paul JacobsRolled into town with a broken spoke. The owner pulled the cassette off to see that the chain had gone between the cassette and hub, damaging the 9 spokes on that side. He replaced them all and got me back on the road in about an hour at a fair price. Thanks!
Jun 23, 2019 · Robert BoothOver the years I've purchased many things from Black Mountain: a bike, wheels, a shirt, even a nice metal pint cup. All have been great. But I continue to utilize this shop because the owner, Mike, puts in the work. He doesn't take shortcuts and takes his work seriously. My bike is as important as my car and Mike feels that. The wheels he built for me ten years ago are just as solid and straight as the day I got them. This is bespoke craftsmanship. A diamond in the rough.
